Marie Fredriksson shows her art

"Me", by Marie Fredriksson.
Singer Marie Fredriksson has had art within herself throughout her entire life. But it is only in the recent years she has chosen to display her works in public. Now comes her first solo exhibition outside Stockholm, at the Little Gallery in Gothenburg. She was involved from 1984 and she’s still in the middle of a song and music career, both solo and in pair with Per Gessle of Roxette. Right now she is on top of the Swedish single charts with “Arn-film” theme. Later in the fall, she'll be making her comeback on stage with “Star Power”, a special show, addressed only to companies. Her first tour after the brain tumor she had suffered six years ago. Only one second about the disease. Doctors declared me cured two years ago and for me it is history, I'm healthy, full stop, says Marie Fredriksson determined. The art and drawings of Marie Fredriksson, to which she has always been devoted, had to come to life more during her convalescence and recovery. After the fall of 2004, she released a solo disc, "The Change" where she has her own charcoal drawings on the cover. It was fun and gave me the appetite for it. Earlier, I had drawn and painted for myself and only shown to family and friends, says Marie Fredriksson. She was invited to make an exhibition in the fall of 2005, when she had her first one, at the Gallery Glass Doctor in Stockholm. The audience was appreciative, all the drawings being sold the second day. The exhibition in Goteborg will be her third and the first individual outside the capital. We meet on a sunny afternoon, in the gallery, where she will exhibit, located a stone's throw of Götaplatsen. She browses among dozens of her art creations, as they are packaged and are leaned against a wall, while discussing the details of the exhibition gallery with arcade stones. With big gestures, she laughs often, telling us how she works with charcoal and ballpoint pen: I love charcoal, with ballpoint pen, there are so many nuances and I can erase all the time with my fingers. Sometimes, she adds color. I work with a very soft chalk, and in recent years, my paintings have become more and more colorful. It's nice to mix charcoal and chalk, it always comes with lots of feelings when I work, explains Marie Fredriksson. It also means that when she draws, she touches with her fingers and carefully feels the quality of the hand-made paper. She has also tried to work with oil. But there are no pictures that are shown. You have to take a long time with it. Oil is difficult, and, for me, that I’m accustomed to work a lot with my fingers, it is very odd with the brush. But we'll see, maybe one day. I actually liked the course. Marie Fredriksson lives with her family in a villa in Djursholm. The dining room is her studio. The light is special, and this is important. This is where I paint often, when my children are gone to school. Here, I have silence. It is a must, silence or exactly the opposite - U2 at the highest volume. Yes, I am a little dual; it is because I was born in the twin star sign. That duality comes also evident in the paintings too, continues Marie and takes off her dark glasses so I can see her brown eyes. She thinks of herself that she is both impulsive and spontaneous. If I think of something, I must do it now. But while a picture can be completed in a couple of hours, after that I can sit up to a month and more. The reasons why there are mostly portraits: both the imagination and the reality. Feelings are the main driving force when Marie is creating art and music. Both joy and sadness are important in creativity. I must dare to take the grief and draw it. Marie Fredriksson is very fond of nature. It is where she gathers force and inspiration. I often take long walks by the water and also enjoy to just wander in our own garden, which is well raised and old, so where are surrounded by a hundred years. Marie Fredriksson, received a lot of letters and e-mails with questions and comments about her pictures. I have my own way to express myself and I do what I do regardless, but it is always fun and interesting to know how others interpret and look at my art. The art has given her new friends and is touching more and more her life. The best part of my life is that it directs itself. It just floats in, now the exhibition in Gothenburg is in force but I already have new requests that I’m thinking about. Source: GÖTEBORGS-POSTEN
